Chapter 01
Why cabinet doors need their own kind of job
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts get handled every day. Hands, grease, steam and the constant opening and closing put more wear on a finish in a month than a wall sees in years, so a coating that reads fine on a wall can chip or dull fast on a door. A hard, smooth, level finish on cabinetry generally takes a harder-wearing product and more prep between coats than a flat wall does, and any dust in the room shows up on a level door in a way it never would on a textured wall.

What the process calls for on cabinetry
Joints on cabinet frames and doors are filled with wood filler and Bondo as specified, the same materials used on casings, crowns, baseboards, wainscoting and specialty trims. Doors, frames and any built-in millwork are then sanded with fine-grit sandpaper and given one Benjamin Moore Oil Enamel Underbody coat, the harder-wearing product the process reserves for trim and cabinetry rather than the flat paint used on walls.
The area gets a full dust clean before finish coats begin, and on the day those finish coats start, the cabinetry, trim and millwork are wiped down with denatured alcohol to clear any surface dust one more time. Any imperfection found is sanded and corrected between coats before the next one goes on.
